ALEX KIDD

EDUCATION

Alex grew up in Central California. He attended University of California, Berkeley where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. He attended Southwestern Law School where he obtained his Juris Doctorate degree.

Alex enjoys cycling, post-modernist literature, stand-up comedy, and hiking.

BACKGROUND

Alex has practiced workers’ compensation defense for over 12 years. He focuses exclusively on representing insured and self-insured employers in workers’ compensation defense and related matters. Alex litigates high-exposure work injuries, discrimination claims, as well as Serious and Willful issues. He negotiates the resolution of large loss claims, and has assisted clients in subrogation recovery on third party credit issues. He has represented clients engaged in a wide variety of businesses including but not limited to the following: transportation, construction; manufacturing; engineering; service; hospitality; retail stores; and healthcare. He handles work-related injuries, repetitive trauma, wage differential, and permanent and total disability cases.

Alex is an aggressive litigator who specializes in high exposure and complex claims for our clients. He is an experienced trial attorney and has successfully litigated complex issues before the WCAB, whether they are large self-insureds or public entities.

MEMBERSHIPS

Alex is admitted to practice in all of the California state courts, the United States District Court for the Central District of California and the United States Court of Appeal for the Ninth Circuit. Alex is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He is also a member of the California State Bar Workers’ Compensation Section.

HENRIK KARAPETIAN

EDUCATION

HENRIK KARAPETIAN completed his undergraduate education at California State University, Northridge, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Business Law. Mr. Karapetian received his Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School and was admitted to the State Bar of California shortly after. He is a member of the American and Los Angeles County Bar Associations.

BACKGROUND

After admitted to the Bar, Mr. Karapetian started his own litigation practice, specializing in Family Law, Personal Injury, DUI and Bankruptcy cases. He has represented clients in a variety of different claims and gained experience handling request for orders, emergency motions, depositions and trials.

Prior to joining Samuelsen, Gonzalez, Valenzuela and Brown, Mr. Karapetian was an associate at a large Workers’ Compensation Defense firm where he defended insurance companies and self-insured employers in all phases of litigation. He is well versed in court appearances, having handled numerous status conferences, mandatory settlements conferences, priority conferences and expedited hearings. Through his extensive litigation experience, Mr. Karapetian has adapted an aggressive and effective litigation style that has helped him achieve favorable results for his clients. Mr. Karapetian works diligently to maintain strong relationships with his clients, placing their goals and needs as his primary focus.

MONIQUE A. GIUFFRE

EDUCATION

Monique A. Giuffre attended California State University Northridge where she received her Bachelor of the Arts in Psychology. Ms. Giuffre received her Juris Doctor from Whittier College School of Law and was admitted to the California State Bar in 2002.

BACKGROUND

Mrs. Giuffre is certified by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization Workers’ Compensation Law and has been successfully litigating Workers’ Compensation claims at Samuelsen, Gonzalez, Valenzuela & Brown, LLP for over fifteen years. Ms. Giuffre has experience representing a breadth of employers, insurance carriers and third party administrators along with managing our Westlake Village office with tremendous success.

Ms. Giuffre has valuable experience in all phases of workers’ compensation litigation and has built a reputation for herself as an aggressive defendant advocate. She is often sought out for consult by employers and claims professionals on their Workers’ Compensation matters. Ms. Giuffre has conducted numerous trials on the case in chief and has utilized her experience and reputation to leverage favorable outcomes including several take nothings for multiple clients.

HARVEY S. BROWN

EDUCATION

HARVEY S. BROWN received his Bachelor’s Degree from California State University of Northridge in 1969, and obtained his law degree from San Fernando Valley College of Law in 1979. Mr. Brown has been working as a Workers’ Compensation specialist after passing the exam with the State Bar of California in 1993.

BACKGROUND

Mr. Brown was admitted to practice in 1979, and worked as an attorney at the State Compensation Insurance Fund from approximately 1979 to 1991. Until 1986, Mr. Brown was an associate attorney, handling complex legal matters including defense, 132(a) and S&W’s. During that time, Mr. Brown also trained in and handled the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation claims for the State Compensation Insurance Fund.

In 1986, Mr. Brown was appointed Managing Partner of the Cerritos office of State Compensation Insurance Fund. In that capacity, he managed 15 attorneys as well as a support staff of 20. During that period, Mr. Brown dealt with various claims departments, providing direction, control and training. From 1986 to 1991, Mr. Brown also provided legal training, conducted seminars, and created teaching materials for the seminars for 300 attorneys with State Compensation Insurance Fund. During that time Mr. Brown also advised school districts and self-insured employers such as the State of California which would often involve meetings with state agencies and state personnel.

In 1991, Mr. Brown became an associate with Samuelsen, Gonzalez, Valenzuela & Brown and in 1994; he became a partner with the firm. Since 1998, Mr. Brown has been a member of the Board of Directors of the firm and currently serves as the managing partner of the Newport Beach, Encino, San Diego and Sacramento offices.

Prior to opening the Orange County office, Mr. Brown was in charge of training all new attorneys with the firm. This included integrating them into the Workers’ Compensation environment, giving them complete training as well as monitoring their daily activities. As a managing partner, Mr. Brown handles all complex litigation including 132(a) ‘s and S&W’s.
Mr. Brown has been the Secretary, Vice President and President of the Long Beach Workers’ Compensation section of the Long Beach Bar Association. In that regard, he has also conducted seminars in the past several years on Workers’ Compensation issues for the Long Beach Bar Association, together with Mr. Allan Bass, the former presiding judge from Santa Ana.

Mr. Brown has also prepared a newsletter for the past several years, providing clients with the latest updates, and giving them legal and advisory opinions on the latest Workers’ Compensation laws. Mr. Brown also performs Workers’ Compensation seminars for his clients, and provides legal advice by telephone and/or e-mail on cases that he may not be representing clients on.
